NITEK - CCTV Twisted Pair Video Solutions

The City of Chicago, Illinois

The following is information on the application and solution for the City of Chicago:

The application was to install in excess of 300 P/T/Z cameras throughout the city installed on stop light poles and fed back to City Hall. The challenge was to obtain quality, real-time video to City Hall at distances of 7,500 to 13,000 feet (2,285 to 3,962 meters) while maintaining a cost effective solution.

Fiber and DSL were out of the question due to cost while coax could not support the distance. Therefore, the integrator positioned to utilize existing infrastructure consisting of 50 year old 19 gauge telephone wire run all over the city connecting various services through communication boxes. By using the existing wire, they simply ran 24 gauge wire from the communication box to the camera, installed the Nitek EX1120RR transmitter at the camera, made their connections throughout the city via existing punch down blocks, back to the head-end(City Hall). At the head end was a rack populated with the appropriate number of Nitek RK400 rack chassis. In the RK400 rack chassis, they installed the EX1120RR receiver card and made the necessary gain and loss adjustments via dip switches.

P/T/Z control was connected via UTP with a Nitek DL1142 per camera mounted at the head end.

The initial phase of the project has been completed with excellent color quality at 30 frames/second up to 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) without the need to repeat.
